Senna is an herb commonly used to treat constipation. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved senna as an over-the-counter laxative. In addition to finding it in tea drinks and health supplements, senna tea is also used for weight loss.
Senna tea is made from the leaves of the senna plant. The active ingredients in senna leaf extract, called glycosides and sennosides, act as stimulants in the colon to enhance peristalsis or intestinal muscle contractions. In addition, these active ingredients allow the intestines to retain more fluid and have the effect of softening the intestinal contents and stimulating fecal emptying.
1. Laxative effect
The medicinal effect of senna leaf extract is the strongest with dianthrone glycosides such as sennoside A, followed by anthraquinone glycosides; the combined glycosides have a protective effect and are decomposed into aglycones by bacteria or enzymes when they reach the large intestine. Stimulate the large intestine, increase intestinal peristalsis, and reduce water absorption and cause diarrhea.
2. Antibacterial
Senna leaf extract straight powder has inhibitory effects on a variety of bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Proteus, Shigella, Candida albicans, and certain pathogenic skin fungi.
